An Almost Life vs A Yes Life

Untitled
I almost didn't take my camera to Maui.

Untitled
Why?

It's heavy.
Really heavy.
I use a Canon 7D body and an 85 mm lens.
It's hefty...massive...cumbersome.
Did I mention it's heavy?
Untitled
I almost didn't take these pictures.

Untitled
Why?

I was nervous about taking my camera anywhere near sand.
Sand is bad for cameras.
I did the math.
Maui had a lot of beaches + Beaches are filled with sand = There is a lot of sand in Maui.

Untitled
I almost said "No," when the Agronomist asked, "Do you want to get some sunset shots?"

Untitled
Why?

It had been a long day;
it was windy;
and I was being vacation lazy.
But the girls said "Yes," and had some ideas they wanted to try.

Untitled
I almost didn't get these pictures.

Untitled

Why?

Because I forgot for a moment how much
photos help you to remember.
Even if the memory is of a certain blogger mom,
yelling at her girls to stop fooling around and to look at the @#! sun before it set : )

 Untitled
I almost didn't take my good camera to Maui.
I almost didn't take these pictures.
I almost said "No."

Untitled
Almost def'n... not quite, nearly, little short of being.
Today I realized
looking back at these images
that I don't want to live an "Almost Life."

Untitled
Why?

Because if I choose to live an "Almost Life?"
I would forget the moments a "Yes" life always brings me.

xoxo,

Jenny Matlock

  11. Awesome photos.

But having a photographer daughter, I understand about the camera being heavy and sand being bad for cameras. Those are valid points.

But I'm glad your other valid point won out. Cameras can be replaced but those moments are priceless! Good job.

  13. Absolutely love this - and reminds me why I reluctantly opt to lug around a heavy camera. Every single shot is absolutely amazing!!

  16. Dana, I love this post so much and what you wrote here. I too have thought, I don't want to lug around my camera or get it dirty or risk losing it or damaging it. I was just apologizing to my mom for taking so many pictures on our recent road trip. BUT, then I realized that this is what I love, and I love the memories, and the photos just make me happy.

I'm SO glad you took your camera to Maui. I LOVE these photos. My favorite is of your daughter "holding" the sun.

    xo.

  18. ohhhh....how I can relate. I didn't bring my camera on our last trip to Colorado. Because it was heavy. And who wants to ski with a heavy camera. So I don't have "those pictures." I have snapshots. Not photos. *sigh*

Good on you for not falling into that trap. I applaud you!!! Gorgeous photos. Beautiful captured memories.

  23. A "yes" life is riskier, but oh how many things we miss if we think on all the no's! Also, maybe invest in a small/lightweight camera too? Have a happy Mothersday!

  28. wow, dana, to think that these shots almost never happened makes me shudder - funny timing, i've been going back and forth over whether to bring (lug) mine with me on a travel-heavy "trip of a lifetime" i'm taking this July with my ladybugs ... seeing your shots and reading your inspiring words has pretty much sealed the deal for me - no matter the inconvenience, the camera comes with!
