She Was Our Babysitter

I remember the day I realized I needed to find a babysitter.
We had an event we needed to attend, and Grandma and Grandpa would be out of town.
Ten years had passed and only family had looked after my girls.
But who?
Who could I trust my children with?

It kept me up at night.
I might have even shed a few tears over it, while eating a pan of brownies.
It's all a blur.
Tums were involved.

And then it came to me.
We watched the family at our piano recitals.
She was the eldest of four.
She went to our daughter's school.
But was she old enough?
Did she babysit?
Would she like my children?
I saw them across the gym floor during a school Halloween party.
Would their daughter be interested in babysitting?
She looked so responsible.
Oh look how she is helping her little brother.
I'll pay her anything.... anything.
She would love too?
She loves children?
It was too good to be true.
The answer was...

Yes.
She was the only babysitter my children ever had.
After two years, my eldest took over.

They remember the leaves she collected with them and made into cards.
They remember the craft bag with something new inside each time she came.
They especially liked the old christmas lights she helped make into little Rudolphs.

For a few years there...
Requests for mom and dad to go for a date became more frequent.
It was becoming a bit of a problem.
They started referring to her as mom.
They often asked me where my craft bag was?

And now?
They will always have the memories of their amazing babysitter.
She has finished high school and is now attending college.
In January she is off to do some mission work, and will make more children very happy.

It was a time I felt my prayers had been given special priority.
Thank you for always taking such great care of our girls K.
My daughter now babysits for others and has her own craft/book bag.
She learned from the best!

Good Luck and God Bless you on your journey.

  4. What sweet memories! I laugh when I think of how different our babysitting stories are! :) Our babysitter gave piggy back rides, destroyed Lego castles, and made chocolate chip cookies but then she had 3 little ragamuffin boys to entertain! And entertain she did! Now she has 4 children of her own with a 5th on the way. She is a young mother, just barely 19 when she got married and her 1st at 20. (our "babysitter" sometimes wears a beard!! yes it is our eldest son!!)

I am so glad you have such fond memories of your babysitter! I love it when they become part of the family!!

  13. Hi Miss Dana! You will love using a macro lens. It's a whole new world. I didn't use it on the feet shot though - that was my trusty 50mm f/1.4D for Nikon. Love that little bugger and shoot about 90% of normal portrait shots with it.

  15. Ahhh. I need one of those. With 5 kids it is usually easier and cheaper to just trade with a friend.

Okay, good to know I am not alone. My oldest is almost 8 and we have NEVER had a babysitter. Seriously, I CANNOT imagine it. Really.

Now I am stressed thinking about it. Send brownies. And wine.
