Blink~I Think I Missed It

It's that time of year again.
My youngest has been bugging me to decorate for fall.
sigh.
I have to admit.  I don't put a lot of effort into it.
You see in September we often get some beautiful temperatures, so I try desperately to pretend it's still summer for as long as I can.
And then by October, almost overnight,  it becomes so cold, it doesn't seem worth the trouble.

Don't get me wrong I love fall.  It's probably my most favourite season.
The problem is, here in Northern Canada, if you blink?
You might miss it.

See this little guy up above.  Well he's a trooper.
He's already been through several hard freezing frosts.
And on Friday he hung on even though he was covered in snow.

We have difficulty deciding whether to pull out the rakes or the snow shovels.
As I sit here writing about fall,  all the leaves on the ground have a nice dusting of snow on them.
I'm not surprised.
I still remember several years back, when two feet of snow had fallen the night of Halloween.
We chose to stay home.
Halloween just doesn't seem to fit here.
Kind of like Christmas in Hawaii.
Something just isn't quite right.

But then again, that's just me.
The girls however are completely ignoring their mom and are looking forward to the holiday with great enthusiasm.
My youngest made this all by herself.
It was called the "I Want My Mummy" craft.  And can be found  here.

Do you think she's trying to tell me something?

When they were creating the above design, should I have taken it personally when they asked me to "look at them... and stay still for a minute" while they drew on the face?

Maybe I need to be more like the leaves.
And just hang in there.
I can't run from the inevitable winter that is grasping at our fall.
Plus I must remember that
 no matter what the season,
my children
 need their
"mummy."

  1. Yes it's exactly like that here too, blink and it's summer turned winter.
And if you stack three of those mummies, you get a snowman! Double duty decor.

  5. In Northern California fall is pretty subtle.

You kinda have to go looking for it.

    But I usually find it.

    I want my mummy too.

  7. Those little mummies are adorable! I know I shouldn't say this, but sometimes I envy your cold weather. I would love snow! At least it's only an hour and 1/2 drive from us once winter is truely here. Here's to a clear, crisp Halloween :)

  9. I can empathize with you on the Halloween decorating! This year I hung a few cloth ghosts from the tree, a couple of signs, 2 big spiders & some faux fall leaves. Simple & easy to take down when the snow hits it!! I love the poetic nature of your words combined with your photos! The mummies are super cute & that is what your girls will remember, that their mummy made everything fun!! hugs,Cathy
