Can We Survive Summer... With Only One Bathroom?

IMG_1870
Remember when you would be finished on your last day of school?
How exciting it was to be done?

But also how strange it was to say good bye to your teacher and your friends?
Knowing you would not see them for eight weeks.

Summer in a house with three little women can be wonderful.
Special.
A time to make memories.

Run through wheat fields.
Crochet, Can, Listen to fiddle music.
Didn't you ever read Little House on The Prairie?

OK so it's a little different at the Bungalow.

We don't have a dog.

But at the same time it can be a little trying.

This year we have a Teenager, preteen, and middle schooler.

Can they survive the summer together...
with only one bathroom?

We have six weeks to find out and mom is a wee bit concerned.

I do have a few tricks up my sleeve though.
And as a seasoned mother,
I am happy to share the wisdom I have gleaned over the last fifteen years.

Dairy Queen,  Marble Slab Creamery, Foothills Ice Cream, and Baskin Robbins.

Bribery my friends... can go a long way, when trying to attain that perfect Martha summer you were dreaming of.

Here's to Ice Cream and all it's magical properties.

Hope you are all having a fantastic summer my friends.

  1. I enjoy reading your posts, Dana. When I was growing up, there were 7 of us in a house with one bathroom. I can't even imagine that now!

  4. Wow I remember those days! But I have to admit we had one bathroom with 3 boys... and we homeschooled at the time... in Alaska! But these days we have more bathrooms and they all go to public school.

Ice cream as bribery... I like that! Now to think of something for the eldest as he has decided he doesn't like ice cream. I know! Who doesn't like ice cream? Apparently a 17 year old in the middle of the U.S. in a town that has quite a few seasonal ice cream shops/stands... odd, odd boy, even if I do have to say so myself.

    Enjoy your summer!

  5. OR....

thinks of the fun they could have decorating their own, personal chamber pots! Very, very Martha-like as well. A table, a mirror, a jug of water and a bowl combined with the chamber pot...everything will be as it should!

    ha!

  7. YES, you can survive with only one bathroom. We have only one and I have two daughters and a son and the husband. (Granted, the girls are grown and gone now.)

Also, for the first 12 years of my life, I lived in a house WITHOUT a bathroom. Two parents and five kids used an outhouse in warm weather and a "pot on the porch" during the long and cold Minnesota winter.

    You can do it.

And do your girls really only have six weeks of summer vacation? Here in Minnesota students are off from early June to the day after Labor Day.

  9. Just in case you're fresh out of "when I was a kid" stories, I have you covered for an occasion such as this one. When I was a kid I lived in an apartment and shared a bathroom with TWELVE other people.

  10. Haha. Well, if it gives you any hope, I grew up in a home with 7 girls (one boy) and only 1 bathroom. Okay, technically we had 2, but the other one was for my dad and it was...well...gross. So we all only used one.
    good luck!!
