Poolside At Bungalow'56 (Spoiled Children)

Since I'm still stranded without any operating systems on my computer
and I'm really wishing the snow on the ground would leave,
I figured it was time to haul one out of the archives...

It will always be one of my favourite posts.

Poolside At Bungalow'56
or the alternate title
Spoiled Children

It seemed everywhere I looked, (see here and here,I was reading blogs about summer fun.

I found myself gazing at families splashing in the surf at their local beaches,
or yelling "Cannonball," as they flew into their backyard pools.
I was trying not to let the green monster of envy show it's ugly face around here,
but let me tell you, it was getting harder and harder with every blog post I read.

You see, this story started many years ago.
It had been my dream to have a pool ever since my early 20's
even before I had kids.
I attended university on Vancouver Island in Victoria.
I was fortunate enough to be near family.
I would often enjoy some time on the weekends at my Aunt and Uncle's
for a Sunday meal, and it was always much appreciated.

They had five children....and (being smart parents) they had a full size pool.
I watched as my younger cousins, and most of the neighbourhood kids,
played all day swimming and splashing, and having a blast.

Ever since then, having a pool for my girls had been my dream.
My kids deserved it.
I figured I deserved it.

So this past Saturday, I decided we could wait no longer.
My Frugal self, knew there was a way!
My kids were so thrilled, it brought a tear to my eye.
With a lump in my throat I watched them frolic in the water.
I could see they pretty much figured I was the coolest mom on the block.
I understood then what it felt like to be a superhero.

I was so cool, I even let them have a pool with bubbles.

They lounged and hung out in their pool.

It made me want to jump in with them.

Summer is the best time of year.
Especially.... with a swimming pool.

If that had been me, I wouldn't have wanted to leave the water until late evening.

They were disappointed I wouldn't let them jump off the trampoline into the pool,
but I explained you have to have a really deep one to be able to do something like that.

Sometimes though, I feel as though my kids are not very appreciative.
I didn't think it was too much to ask them to get a long
at least for an hour or two without arguing.

Why couldn't they just be happy?
I mean, they had a pool, for goodness sake?
I try my best, but it just never seems to be good enough.

They just never seem to "appreciate" how good they have it.

It was at this moment I realized... it was going to be a verrrry long summer.

Rubbermaid Pool or not...

  3. Hello my fellow night owl. Your post made me laugh so hard my incision hurt. But I needed and appreciate the laugh so much the pain was worth it. I loved the way the looks on your girls face's changed as the post neared the end. And then I realized why when I saw the final photo. Thanks again for the laugh. I hope your are enjoying your summer. My pool is giving me fits so you might appreciate the small quality of you current pool.
Tasha, the big white fluffy dog was digging a hole in the flower bed and more than 5 gallons of dirt ended up in the deep end of the pool. It has been down hill since then. The water is too hard, the chlorine won't stabilize and the ph has been a nightmare to keep in the correct range. And then the algae showed up. I think I have solved the hard water problem which will in turn solve the chlorine and Ph problems. So first thing in the morning I am back to the pool store to get the algae controller. You might have guessed that the upkeep on a pool can be expensive. This week I would definitely trade pools.

  5. Love the "pool" pics! Looks like you are off to a great start for summer! I always think the first week off of school is the hardest on kids & parents, until that informal schedule is established. We are on week 2 & everyone is doing well. I am having a hard time trying to find blog time! Maybe I need to get up earlier or maybe the pool we belong to, could get wi-fi....but then the pool wouldn't be the same, would it?

  8. It will be the little things that build character in your daughters. I guarantee, this "pool," which looks suspiciously like a blue plastic storage bin, will be a major part of the character-building. Make sure your daughters include this picture in their autobiographies when one of them gets to be prime minister of Canada and the other one invents the cure for the Ebola virus!!

  18. I cannot stop laughing.

What is important here is that they got a pool. And, if they were barbies it would be gigantic. Bet they didn't think of that. :)

    Enjoy your summer. :)

  32. That is hilarious! Keep praying. I had just about given up on a pool. We got one this summer because a friend took theirs down and wanted someone to haul it off for them. It's not pretty, but it's good to teach an 8yo how to swim!

Your post is funny and you have that distinct sense of humor in you. :-) I had been wondering what made you say that your kids just don't appreciate you; and as I was scrolling down the pictures and ended up with the last pic, I can better understand them. LOL :-) You are so funny indeed. By the way, your kids are so cute:-)

  63. that story was darling! Thanks so much for sharing.

  64. HAHA! That was funny! I'd love a pool too. Where I live, it can easily get to be over 100 in the summer. Sometimes over 110! Yikes. But putting a pool into our background would be prohibitively expensive. So no pool for us!

    ReplyDelete
  65. HAHA, Sweetly Silly:) And don't worry, someday they'll be close as ever...

  66. When my kids were in grade school, we bought them a swimming pool -- a galvanized metal stock tank (for cows). They were young enough (and it was deep enough -- about 3 feet) they didn't care. But now, of course, they won't let us live it down.

  67. You have me laughing So hard right now... They really couldn't stop arguing for 5 minutes? I remember those days!
