She's Kind Of My Hero

I'm so proud of Youngest.
She has taught me a lot about who she is this past week.
A few weeks back we had an Orthodontist appointment.

And like her sisters before her, she will be starting the first phase,
to straighten out those darn cute front teeth.
Unfortunately Dr. Herbert let us know one stubborn baby tooth needed to come out.
There was no big rush, but it would eventually have to be looked after.

Youngest couldn't stop thinking about the looming tooth pull.
The fears were especially strong just before falling asleep.
Many many tears were shed.
And finally she asked, Mom could you please make the appointment.

The next day I had forgotten her request,
and by nightfall the tears reappeared.
The next morning Youngest stood before me with the phone
and told me to make the appointment.

She knew at the age of eight, that facing her fear head on,
was going to be much better than dealing with the worry and fear that came from waiting.

She was tired of feeling this way.
When I called to make the appointment and told them what was happening,
they managed to get her in within a few hours.
She was such a trooper at the dentist's office.

Not one tear was shed during the freezing.
She had wiped the last ones away as we sat in the Suburban in front of the office.
We waited until she was sure no one would know she had shed any.

I am always so thankful for the ceiling TV's.
Family Channel is a great distraction when waiting for freezing to take hold.

While they pulled that tooth out,
I watched for any signs of discomfort.
I always check their toes...

and their hands.

But she was just fine.
We have a wonderful Dentist.

Even though it frightened her to no end,
She was determined to get this over with.
I was so proud of her.

She realized facing her fear was much more preferable,
to being held captive by the nightly tears her imagination was creating.

I just feel as though she has shown me who she is this past week.
I know she will be able to handle whatever challenges life may place before.

She's kind of my hero today.

Love you Youngest, don't ever forget how strong you are.

xoxo,
(mom)
