Ghostly Sour Cream Sugar Cookies ~ Magically Delicious

These cookies were a favourite of mine last year,
so since I was such a slack non-baking mom this Halloween I figured this retro post
(originally posted Nov 2, 2010)
might make up for my less than domestic efforts.

Plus it will be far better for my waste line : )

Me: Honey?

The Agronomist: Yeah?

Me: Did you eat all the sugar cookies I made for the class?

The Agronomist: No....did you?

Me: (Indignantly) No!

The Agronomist: Why?

Me: There used to a whole plate full... and now they're all gone!

The Agronomist: Well?... they didn't just fly away.

PS I'm just in love with this ghost!

PSS
These GHOSTLYcookies were so good,
I might almost describe them as Magically Delicious!

So I figured a recipe like this needs to be shared:
Sugar cookies are always a kid favourite
and while Canadian Thanksgiving has come and gone,
sugar cookies are becoming a constant in most Bungalow'56 holiday celebrations.

These could be cut into any shape suitable for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I wish we could have.... : )

They are a soft perfectly mild (not too sweet) cakey cookie that needs to be rolled thinly, so that they don't turn out heavy.  (ie: see pictures above)

Sour Cream Sugar Cookies
(The Kind you find in old fashioned Bakery's)

Ingredients:

Cookies
1 3/4 cups white sugar
1 cup butter (or margarine)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract ( almond extract may be used also)
2 eggs
2 tsp lemon juice
1 cup sour cream
5 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda

Icing
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
2 Tbsp evaporated milk
1 tsp vanilla extract ( or almond)
1/8 tsp salt
4 cups confectioners' sugar

1. Cream sugar, butter, vanilla and eggs.  Add sour cream.
2. Mix together dry ingredients.  Gradually add to the egg/sugar mixture.
3. Cover and hill for 1 hour.
4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
5. Roll out on lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thick.  Do not make any thicker as the cookies rise.
Cut out cookies.
Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet for 10-12 minutes.

6. To make frosting: in small bowl, with mixer at med. beat together the softened cream cheese and evaporated milk until smooth.  Add vanilla, salt and icing sugar.  Beat until well blended.  Color as desired and frost cooled cookies.

Enjoy!

  25. Like so many others, I, too, would like to know how you created those other-worldly images.

The cookies sound yummy, especially with that cream cheese frosting. I actually make sugar cookies with a recipe that includes cream cheese in the dough. It's the recipe my mom used when we made Christmas cookies. I also roll the dough paper-thin.

    Great, creative post, Dana.
